Food Safety

We are committed to ensuring that food and drink intended for human consumption, which is produced, stored, distributed, handled or consumed within the district is without risk to the health or safety of the consumer.

There are around 2,000 registered food businesses in the district and we inspect them all at regular intervals.

We also deal with food complaints. Last year we investigated nearly 200 complaints about food and food premises, both local and nationally.

We work with food businesses to achieve compliance with legislation through inspection, education and the provision of information.

Where enforcement action is necessary, we take appropriate action dependent on the seriousness of the breach of the law, guided by our enforcement policy.

The Food Standards Agency is another very important source of information about food safety issues.
