Council to develop eco-town alternative

EAST Lindsey District Council has decided not to proceed with an eco-town expression of interest/bid as proposed. Instead, the Authority will develop its work with local partners to address the key issues of affordable housing, skills, investment and coastal flood defences.

Commenting on the decision, Leader of the Council, Councillor Doreen Stephenson, said: "It was important to have had this debate and that we clearly identify key issues raised by the eco-town expression of interest.

"Working with our communities, our local and regional partners, we must now focus our efforts on securing a realistic, funded range of opportunities that will address the core issues of affordable housing, skill development and investment in the District."

With the challenges facing our communities now clearly in the public mind we will work with our local communities to demand support from Regional and National resources to improve the lives of all residents in our District.

The District Council will do all that it can to champion the integrity, resilience and aspirations of the District in support of this effort.

The amended proposal adopted by the Council reads as follows:

1. Withdraws immediately the Council's expression of interest/bid for an eco-town as proposed.

2. Re-affirms its commitment to supporting and enhancing all its communities.

3. With partners and stakeholders the Planning Policy Committee immediately undertake a feasibility study into investigating where there are sustainable development and regeneration opportunities in parallel with the ongoing Coastal Study.

4. Consults widely on the outcomes of the feasibility study and this group report to the Executive Board with its findings with an action plan to be endorsed by full Council.

5. This Council seeks with partners additional housing allocation to address the clear need across the district and promote sustainable growth.

6. Together with partners where needed lobbies for improvement in existing levels of flood protection pending the outcomes of the coastal study.
