Article 4 Direction

If a building in a conservation area is especially important, it can be covered by an article 4 direction. This gives the planning department more control over what happens to the building.

This is not designed to stop work being done to these buildings. However any work that is allowed must respect the importance of the building. The article 4 direction usually covers historic buildings that have architectural importance.

Each direction is specific to a certain area and so the exact wording canĀ  cover different things. The direction must be agreed by the Secretary of State.

Things that are controlled include:

  • changes to the shape, size, materials, of windows, doors and their openings
  • the addition of porches
  • alterations and additions to the roof.

We currently have 4 directions in place. These are:

  • Louth
  • Horncastle
  • Wainfleet
  • Old Bolingbroke

There are leaflets available to download for two of the Article 4 Directions.
