Shop Keepers

If you sell portable batteries, you may be required to take back used batteries from the public from 1 February 2010.

If you are a retailer and you sell more than 32kg a year of portable batteries in your store (e.g. supermarket, newsagent, hardware store), over the internet, via mail-order or directly to businesses, you will need to take back used portable batteries from the public free of charge.

The aim of the Regulations on the recycling of batteries and accumulators (rechargeable batteries) introduced this year, is to significantly increase UK collection and recycling of used portable batteries from the current rate of about 3% to 25% by 2012, rising to at least 45% in 2016.

Battery Compliance Schemes will collect the used batteries from your premises free of charge. To arrange collection visit the Environment Agency website to use an approved BCS company and discuss requirements with them

For more information on the Regulations and how it affects you visit the Vehicle Certificate Agency (VCA) website or call there helpline: 0844 8000 819 or email: batteries@vca.gov.uk
