Radiation Monitoring

The Health & Safety Section is part of a group of Local Authorities who form the Yorkshire and Humberside Pollution Advisory Council (YAHPAC). Radiation Monitoring was first considered as a result of the Chernobyl incident in 1986 in order to monitor the effects on the UK of the radioactive material which was released.

We continue to monitor the following in order to determine trends in levels of radiation present in the environment:-

  • Environmental Radiation Monitoring (Using a Mini 6-80 Environmental Radiation Meter)

Environmental Samples Grass:-

  • Grass
  • Moss
  • Sheep Droppings
  • Soil silt
  • Vegetables
  • Honey
  • Nuts
  • Construction Materials
  • Fruit
  • Drinking Water
  • Air Filter (Based at Manby)

Results from this monitoring is collated by YAHPAC, the data is then utilised nationally to produce statistics relating to radiation monitoring.
