The Market Town Initiative involved the local community in deciding which aspects of the town could be improved and developing an action plan for it's future regeneration.
Initially the participating towns undertook a health check. The healthcheck contained a series of worksheets on issues which affect the quality of life in market towns. The worksheets were designed as practical checklists to help local people establish factual information about the town. The aim was to get a wide spectrum of opinion about the needs and aspirations of the community.
This covered 4 main topic areas:
- Environment
- Economic Development
- Social and Community issues
- Transport issues
The healthcheck helped people to create a vision for the future through an action plan. The action plan identifies projects to achieve the vision. These projects are then promoted for funding from a number of organisations.
