Not everyone has to pay the full Council Tax. There are various discounts that we can apply to reduce your bill if certain conditions are met.
The full Council Tax bill assumes that there are two adults living in a property. The bill is based on 50% of the charge being for the two adults and 50% for the property itself. Certain people will not be counted when looking at the number of adults living in a property. These are:
- People being cared for in nursing and residential homes
- Patients who are resident in a hospital
- People who are severely mentally impaired
- Full time students, student nurses, apprentices and youth training trainees
- 18 and 19 year olds who are at or have just left school
- Care workers who work for local authorities or charities and are on low pay
- People who care for someone who is not a spouse, partner or child under 18
- Members of religious communities
- People in prison
- People staying in night shelters or hostels
- Members of visiting forces
- People who are diplomats
- Persons still in receipt of child benefit
You can claim a 25% discount if all but one of the people who live in the property is not counted.
You can claim a 50% discount if all the people who live in the property are not counted.
Single Person Discount
You can get a 25% discount if you are the only person living in the property.
Empty and Unfurnished Properties
You can get a 10% discount if your property is furnished and it is your second home, holiday home or is unoccupied in-between tenants. If your property is empty and unfurnished, see exemptions for further details.
Job Related Discount
You can get 50% discount if you have to live in a different property because it is a condition of your job. This also includes members of HM Services and members of the clergy.
