A-Z of Council Services:

Disabled Relief

You may be able to get a reduction on your Council Tax if you or someone who lives in your property is permanently and substantially disabled. The disabled person can be an adult or a child.

As well as being disabled, one of the following conditions must be met:

  • There is an extra bathroom or kitchen in your property, which is needed by the disabled person
  • There is space for a wheelchair to be used in your property and it is essential that a wheelchair is used whilst indoors
  • There is a room used mainly by the disabled person to meet their needs because they are disabled

Disabled Relief reduces the charge to the next band below.  For example, properties in Band C are charged as if they were in Band B.

For Band A properties, a 1/9th reduction will be given.

Disabled Relief makes sure that disabled people needing extra space because of a disability are not punished by having to pay more Council Tax.

If you feel you may qualify for a reduction, please contact us for further information and an application form.
