Abandoned Vehicle Services
The removal and disposal of abandoned motor vehicles from land that is open to the air.

The service is for the benefit of residents of the District and Visitors to the area.

Included within this service is the removal and disposal of abandoned vehicles from the following open land:-

  • Adopted highways and bridleways
  • Un-adopted highways
  • Public car parks
  • Other public land
  • Private land that is open for access on at least one side, provided the land owner does not object to the removal of the vehicle.

On receipt of a service request:-

  • An officer from the Council will examine the vehicle.
  • If it appears to be abandoned a statutory notice, under the Refuse Disposal (Amenity) Act 1978, will be attached, requiring its removal within a specified period, 24 hours or 7 days depending on the condition and estimated value of the vehicle. 
  • If the vehicle is still on site after the notice has expired, the Council will remove and destroy the vehicle if it is of no value or, in the case of a vehicle with some value, store it pending the enquiries regarding ownership. 
  • It is an offence to abandon a motor vehicle, under the provisions of the Refuse Disposal (Amenity) Act 1978.

Restrictions on the Service

This service is not available for:

  • Vehicles that appear to be abandoned on private enclosed property, such as within the boundary of a private dwelling for example.

This service is funded by East Lindsey District Council and Lincolnshire County Council, but in all cases the Authority’s will seek to recover service costs from the last registered owner or the person abandoning the vehicle.
