Dogs

Local authorities have a legal responsibility, under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, to collect and house for up to eight days any dog that is found to be straying.

We exercise this duty through our own “in house” Dog Warden Service. Additionally, whenever possible the Dog Wardens enforce other dog related legislation.

Dog Control Orders were formally adopted by this Council on 1st February 2008.This legislation is enforced on all land covered by the Act.

Whilst not a statutory duty, it is the Councils aim to promote responsible dog ownership and to raise awareness of related issues, through a programme of education by giving presentations to schools, guides, scouts, parish councils and similar groups and by working closely with other organisations, such as the RSPCA.
