Home Energy Efficiency

More than 30% of the UK's emission of global warming causing carbon dioxide comes from the energy requirements in the domestic sector for heating, lighting and appliances. However, this energy is not being used efficiently - it is being wasted. It has been estimated that households in the UK waste an average £300 a year on energy and in so doing also emit two tonnes of carbon dioxide.

In response to this wastage the Government produced the Home Energy Conservation Act (HECA) in 1995 which required all local authorities to compile a HECA Strategy. This Strategy aimed at identifying the type and number of energy inefficient properties in their areas, and to state what policies and measures would need to be implemented to significantly improve the energy efficiency of these properties. The target was set at improving the energy efficiency of all properties built before 1995 by 32.23% over a 10 to 15 year period.

The District Council has a full-time Energy Efficiency Officer dedicated solely to achieving the HECA target. Improving energy efficiency is very much dependent on encouraging people to invest in increasing the insulation of their properties, purchasing energy efficient appliances and heating systems, by illustrating not just the environmental benefits, but the financial savings which can be made by investing in energy efficiency as well.

WASTING ENERGY COSTS YOU,
