A-Z of Council Services:

Requesting a test of a private water supply
A service offered by ELDC to monitor the quality and safety of private drinking water supplies, ie water provided by a local well or bore hole. In most circumstances, for domestic premises this is a free service. Tests on the chemical and microbiological quality of the water will be carried out. Guidance will be provided to improve the quality of the water should it fail any of the tests.

The service is for the benefit of all persons who are residents of ELDC whose premises, either domestic or commercial, are supplied by a private water supply.

By arrangement with the householder a visit can be made to collect a sample of the water for analysis. At least one week’s notice is required to allow for arrangements to be made for the collection and analysis.

This service is available:

Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays)
9.00am to 5pm

Most sampling activities are currently carried out on a Tuesday to fit in with the demands upon the laboratory. However special arrangements can be made for samples to be taken on other days.

The service is available at all locations within ELDC and can be applied for in the following ways:

  • By visiting Council offices
  • By visiting a Customer Service Centre
  • By calling the Council
  • By applying over the Internet

Restrictions on the Service
None

Domestic Premises:

The service is free of charge to domestic properties, providing no water samples have been taken by this department within the previous two years.

Commercial premises:

Commercial premises and those requesting repeat samples will normally be charged at a rate to cover the costs, this will vary enormously depending upon what tests are required. The routine basic parameter tests cost approximately £60 but if further analysis, particularly if pesticide analysis is involved, could be in the order of £200.  This will be charged after tests and analysis have been undertaken.
