A-Z of Council Services:

Design and Access

East Lindsey District Council is working towards higher standards of design for new developments in the District.  The Council is reflecting the national commitment to drive up the standard of development that is being led by the government and their advisory body CABE (Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment).

This commitment to raising standards of design is being supported by the introduction of a statutory requirement for a Design and Access Statement to be submitted with many planning applications.  Since 10 August 2006, many planning applications now have to be accompanied by a Design and Access Statement, which should provide information about how proposals will complement and support the character of the local area.  The Statement also requires developers to outline what consultation they have undertaken and encourage discussions at an early stage with all those parties who will be affected by a new development.

A final important element of the Design and Access Statement is to outline how the needs of all members of the community, particularly those with mobility or other requirements, will be incorporated into the design of a proposal.

It is hoped that the Council’s commitment to raising standards of design coupled with the new legal obligation for developers to prepare a Design and Access Statement will help to prevent poor quality development taking place in East Lindsey.

Further information about Design and Access Statements and the principles of good design are provided in the following presentation.
