A-Z of Council Services:

Tree Management

Management of East Lindsey’s Tree Stock

The tree stock is managed to ensure that all individual or groups of trees are kept in a safe condition, are suitable for the location and offer as little nuisance as possible to neighbours or users of the area in which they are located.

Consideration is given to Health and Safety foremost but environmental and visual considerations are important factors in the management of this valuable resource.

Independent arboricultural surveys by qualified Chartered Arborists are used to advise the management of all significant individual or groups of trees and all work is carried out by our trained staff within our Parks and Gardens Team or by qualified contractors.

Successional planting is an important aspect of our management programmes to ensure the confirmation of this resource for future generations.

Conservation Tree Management

The law protects certain individual and groups of trees. Those trees that have Tree Preservation Orders (TPO’s) or are within Conservation Areas are protected under a range of legislation that makes it an offence to carry out any work on those trees without permission from the Local Authority.

Trees that grow in Council owned property or on public open spaces are also protected as they are deemed as Council property. Anyone wilfully damaging these can be prosecuted.

We can offer limited generic advice to private owners of trees but cannot comment for legal reasons on individual trees or their condition. Similarly it cannot offer advice on the selection of contractors to carry any necessary works other than to advise owners to check public liability insurance and suitable professional qualifications held by any individual or firm offering this service.

Some trees in public open spaces are the responsibility of other landowners. Trees on adopted highway verges are the responsibility of Lincolnshire County Council Highways Department and trees on land owned by individual housing associations will be their responsibility. We currently assist where we can in the identification of such responsible organisations.
