Welcome to the latest Local Plan for our District from Councillor Edward
Mossop
(Chair of the Council’s Sustainable Development Review Group which has
overseen the preparation of the Plan so far)
“Living in a sparsely populated and relatively isolated rural area has both
its advantages and its problems.
Everyone who lives here appreciates the open countryside, the quiet roads,
the historic market towns, the sense of history, the large skies, the bracing
sea air and the fine landscape of the Wolds. This is our heritage.
These same qualities, which give the district its character and charm, can
also create problems. Shortage of affordable housing, poor access to essential
services, rural isolation leading to social exclusion, lack of new investment
from outside the district and an over-reliance on declining industries are just
some of the problems we face. Add to this the fast-growing development pressures
which threaten the quality of our environment and you can begin to see the scale
of the challenges that we need to tackle in our new local plan.
We must make sure that all of our new development adds to our quality of life
without storing up problems for the future. This is the principle of Sustainable
Development and is the driving force behind the new Local Plan. Not only does it
set out to deal with present-day development issues, it also strives to make
sure that any new development will bring benefits for the wider community and
the environment both now and in the future.
The Plan builds on the good work of the previous Local Plans of 1995 and
1999. I encourage you to study it closely and to make your own contribution to
the Plan during its Deposit consultation period so that you can help to make
East Lindsey an even better place to live and work in.”
