An exercise referral programme launched in East Lindsey in May 2007 has helped almost 3000 local people to tackle their health related problems and it wants to help more.
HEELERS, which is a programme run by East Lindsey District Council in partnership with NHS Lincolnshire, focuses on improving the health of those living in the coastal areas of Mablethorpe and Skegness – areas of the District recognised as having many residents who would benefit from health improvement work.
The programme was introduced to help people with a high Body Mass Index (BMI) to become more active. A BMI above 30 can increase the chances of being diagnosed with illnesses such as Onset Type 2 Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease and Osteoporosis.
GPs, Nurses and other health professionals can refer people onto the programme, which consists of 20 free exercise sessions and support from a health professional.
As well as helping people to tackle weight issues, HEELERS can also help address a much broader range of health issues, including arthritis, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes and ease pain levels.
Health Referral Specialist, Ross Cameron, said: “HEELERS has been instrumental in improving the health of so many people and we’re encouraging more people to speak to their GPs and nurses to sign them up to the programme. It’s not just about losing weight, it’s also about helping people to increase their confidence and embrace exercise as part of their daily routine.”
One to one HEELERS sessions take place at the Marisco Medical Practice in Mablethorpe and Embassy Swimming Pool and Fitness Suite in Skegness.
