DON’T be taken for a ride this Christmas - that’s the message from a group of taxi drivers in Skegness who are concerned that partygoers could be driven round the bend if they get a lift from a rogue cabbie.
Ahead of the festive celebrations, Skegness Taxi Owners’ Association and East Lindsey District Council have joined forces to warn the community about the dangers of travelling in an unlicensed taxi.
Chairman of the Association, Richard Odling, said: “We are warning people to be on their guard because we want everyone to get home safely after their night out. In the run up to Christmas there is always an increased risk of unlicensed taxis operating and we’re urging people not to use them because quite often they are unroadworthy, unsafe and uninsured.”
East Lindsey District Council is the licensing authority for taxi and private hire vehicles in the District. The Council licences private hire vehicles, which must be booked in advance and can’t be flagged down; and taxis, which can be flagged down and have an illuminated roof sign. Licensed taxis and private hire vehicles both have identification plates on the back. Drivers also have identification badges that they must display.
The Council’s Licensing Officer, Neil Brooks, explained: “With Christmas and the New Year celebrations coming up, it is likely that there will be more people out celebrating with friends and family. We are urging people to book a recognised taxi or private hire vehicle well in advance for their journey home. Whilst we want everyone to enjoy the festivities, people can become more vulnerable when celebrating and we don’t want anyone to be caught out or put in a situation that is potentially unsafe. ”
If you know of anyone operating an unlicensed taxi or private hire vehicle, please let Neil know by calling 01507 601111 or e-mail to licensing@e-lindsey.gov.uk
