WITH the London 2012 Olympic Games just one year away a UK wide search for Torch Bearers has begun.
The London Olympic Committee is looking for 8,000 truly inspirational people from across the UK to carry the Olympic Flame for part of its mammoth journey that will cover hundreds of miles arriving at the Olympic Stadium in London on Friday, July 27, 2012.
Although the full route is yet to be confirmed, Lincoln has already been announced as an overnight stop on the Torch’s route.
East Lindsey District Council is making a specific appeal for people in its District to put forward nominations for people they think should be given the honour of carrying the Torch.
The Olympic Committee has said it’s looking for…
- someone who has inspired you to do something you never thought possible
- someone who always tries to be the best they can be.
- someone who makes a real difference in their school or local community
- someone who has shown what it means to be a real friend
- someone who shows respect for other people and knows the importance of fair play
2012 Champion for Lincolnshire and Leader of East Lindsey District Council, Councillor Doreen Stephenson, said everyone can benefit from the Games: “London 2012 is a huge opportunity for our District.
We’ve already secured the first national cultural event as part of the 2012 Olympics called Games Time that launches at SO festival 2011 but it would also be fantastic to have people from East Lindsey chosen to carry the Torch.
We have many amazing athletes and others in our community who truly deserve to be given this opportunity and I would encourage people to submit their nominations.”
The UK’s second fastest women over 60m and European Indoor 60m semi-finalist, Bernice Wilson, is also supporting the search for Torch Bearers in East Lindsey. Bernice hopes to represent Great Britain at London 2012: “Carrying the torch would be a real honour for those chosen as you become part of Olympic history. The Olympics aren’t just about the athletes in London – it’s about developing a sense of community pride and being part of something very special and we can all benefit.”
The closing date for nominations is June 27, 2011 and the nomination form can be completed at www.london2012.com If anyone requires help with a nomination, they should contact the District Council’s Cultural Team on 01507 601111.
