A Skegness Guest House has been reclassified as a House of Multiple Occupation after it was found to have permanent tenants.

Owners of the Acorn Guest House on Drummond Road have now agreed to work with East Lindsey District Council on a number of improvements to the premises for the benefit of those living there.

Legislation introduced as part of the Housing Act gives Councils the powers to tackle the historically poor conditions found in larger HMOs by ensuring that the owners of the properties have applied to the Council for a licence to operate them.

Housing Standards Officer, Craig Roberts said: “This is about making sure local people have the chance to live in a decent standard of accommodation. We will be working closely with the owners of the Acorn Guest House to ensure it is brought up to standard urgently for the benefit of those living there.

“Proprietors of all hotels and guest houses must be aware that the Council has powers to inspect their property, and enforce these regulations to ensure they are operating within the law.”

Landlords of properties that are required to be licensed will be actively pursued by the District Council and action will be taken against any who fail to carry out their legal obligations. Any such landlords may be prosecuted through the courts and if found guilty can be fined up to £20,000 for each property.
