An intergenerational graffiti project, supported by the District Council’s Neighbourhood Management Board and Lincolnshire County Council, has added colour to Quebec Road in Mablethorpe.
300 local people came together in August 2009 to produce a selection of colourful artwork that reflected the seasons to brighten up the resort.
The project was funded through the Youth Opportunities Fund to give people of all ages the chance to work together to bridge the generation gap. The art work, which was produced at Mablethorpe Primary School, Sutton on Sea Primary School, Tennyson Secondary School. Station Road in Mablethorpe and the Merridale Hall, Sutton on Sea, was then installed by Lincolnshire County Council.
In total five pieces of artwork have been installed in the area.
James Mayle the Graffiti Artist who worked on project said it was great to see everyone’s enthusiasm: “It was fantastic to see people of all ages working together to help each other with ideas and skills and to produce some amazing artwork worthy of public display. I hope this project has fulfilled not only the aim of producing the public art but also gone someway to bringing older and younger people together in the town.”
The Youth Forum has submitted further funding bids to the Youth Opportunity Fund to help support future intergenerational projects in this area.
Jennie Cooper, Mablethorpe Town Clerk, said the Town Council fully supports the work the District Council’s Neighbourhood Management Team is doing in the area: “These events and activities can only do good in our community by helping to foster mutual understanding.”
Mablethorpe Youth Forum has issued an open invitation to anyone living in the area aged between 11 and 19 to attend its next meeting on April 22, 2010 at 5.30pm at Mablethorpe Boatshed on Victoria Road. They are looking for members who are passionate about their local area and keen to help improve to the quality of life for local people.
