Mablethorpe and Skegness are soon to be independently judged on their floral displays as inspectors from the national ‘In Bloom’ competition prepare to visit both resorts in early July.

Gardeners and local people have been out in force in preparation for the visits to ensure the flower beds, gardens and borders, are all looking great and the judges receive a colourful welcome.

As well as being about excellent floral displays, ‘In Bloom’, which is organised by the Royal Horticultural Society, is about pride in local area and the involvement of the local community to achieve a litter free and sustainable environment. Judges also look at the cleanliness of the area, evidence of sustainability and recycling, and general team work and community effort.

Skegness and Mablethorpe will both be represented in the East Midlands in Bloom Coastal Category.

Through partnership working between East Lindsey District Council, Mablethorpe Town Council, residents and local businesses, Mablethorpe has been successful in the ‘In Bloom’ competition for the past few years, scooping the prestigious Silver award in 2009. Businesses in Mablethorpe have put up hanging baskets in the town too. This year Mablethorpe will also be entered into the national Royal Horticultural Society national category because of its previous success in the competition.

2010 will be the first year Skegness has been entered into the competition and will look to use this year’s result as a marker for the future. Both resorts will be judged separately and in different categories because of their different size populations.

Judges will be escorted through both resorts on July 7 and the results will be announced once all ‘In Bloom’ inspections are completed later in the season.
