Skegness has been crowned ninth in the nation’s all-time favourite seaside resorts according to new research from consumer champion Which? Holidays.

The resort was voted into the top 10 thanks to an independent survey of over 4,000 members of the general public. Skegness was piped to the post by Blackpool who scooped first place, followed by Brighton, Whitby and Scarborough.

The official Which? certificate will be presented to Leader of East Lindsey District Council, Councillor Doreen Stephenson, and Visit Lincolnshire on July 12, 2010.

Cllr Doreen Stephenson, Leader of East Lindsey District Council said about the award "We know Skegness is a top ten seaside resort to visit and we know we offer something special for people visiting our entire District. This is another national endorsement for our coast and another achievement we can be proud of. We must build on this success, develop new opportunities for businesses and employment and continue to encourage people to visit both in season and out of season."

Emma Tatlow, Deputy Chief Executive added “This is a fantastic accolade from one of the most respected independent consumer champions Which? Magazine.

“This award will complement the marketing we do, in partnership with East Lindsey District Council to showcase Skegness; its accommodation, attractions, events and eateries as a great place for visitors from outside of the area and Lincolnshire residents.

The results of the Which? survey follows hot on the heels of national research from British Resorts and Destinations Association (BRADA) whose revealed earlier this week that the British seaside industry is a growing market, despite speculation of a poor outlook, thanks to the national recession.

“The research from BRADA and the Which? award paints a very positive picture for the growth of the visitor economy on Lincolnshire’s coast”, continued Emma Tatlow at Visit Lincolnshire. “We will continue to work with ELDC, the Skegness Town Centre Partnership and Skegness, East Coast and Wolds Hospitality Association (SECWHA) and other partners to develop Skegness as a destination for visitors and residents.”
