The number of reported planning breaches have increased significantly in recent weeks and residents and developers are reminded to check planning permission requirements.

Developers are being reminded to make sure they check whether they need planning permission before beginning any building works.

Since the beginning of February the Council has received 117 complaints from residents about potential planning breaches. These complaints are spread over the whole District.

“District Councils have a national duty to enforce planning regulations and will investigate reported breaches”, said Planning Portfolio Holder, Councillor Neil Cooper. “We always recommend taking planning advice before beginning any development works to make sure people do not get caught out. Planning breaches become costly for those concerned and we want to prevent people from falling foul of the law. Planning Enforcement is our last resort.”

Other issues developers need to consider are whether their development relates to matters such as environmental health, licensing and conservation. The District Council can offer advice on all these issues to anyone considering a development by calling 01507 601111.
