Young people living in East Lindsey have been learning about the need to eat a balanced diet and take regular exercise, as part of a drive to improve the health of young people living on the coast.
East Lindsey District Council has been running a programme, funded by NHS Lincolnshire, to promote healthy eating and help young people better understand the types and quantities of food they should be eating on a regular basis.
Allissia Haw, aged 7 took part in a healthy eating session in Mablethorpe. She, explained: “I have really enjoyed the exercise sessions and liked learning about what’s healthy, and I’m really proud of my plate.”
Exercise Referral Specialist at the Council, Charlotte Swift, said: “The sessions provide young people with an important opportunity to understand what they are eating and how it affects their bodies. Being healthy isn’t about giving up those treats we all love – it’s about combining balanced meals with regular exercise.”
As part of its health programme the District Council also run a free exercise referral programme for seven to 11 year olds called FAB (Fit Active Bodies) Kids. It has so far been attended by 21 young people who have increased their levels of physical activity as a result. Since its launch GPs, parents and school nurses have been referring young people onto the programme which runs for 12 weeks. The next block of sessions will provisionally commence on week beginning 26th April. One session will take place per week and will involve a family based approach to children’s health and fitness.
The next round of FAB sessions will take place at the following locations Alford, Louth , Mablethorpe and Skegness.
