Families in East Lindsey supported by Mortgage Rescue Scheme

EAST Lindsey District Council is one of the first Councils in Lincolnshire to provide support to families through the Government's Mortgage Rescue Scheme.

The scheme is part of a £285m rescue package launched to prevent some of the most vulnerable families losing their homes and experiencing the trauma of repossession. The scheme is only accessible as a last resort for families who have exhausted all other avenues to resolve their financial issues and is run by Councils on the Government's behalf.

The scheme provides either a low interest loan to pay off some of your mortgage to reduce your monthly payments or the Housing Association can buy your home so you can stay there as a tenant.

In East Lindsey, two families from the Skegness area have benefited and as a result have been able to keep their homes.

In January, the District Council with its partners introduced a support package to help the community and local businesses through the recessions. This has seen practical help such as budget planning and guidance for families facing home repossession provided to around 1200 people in the last three months.

Portfolio Holder for Housing, Councillor John Upsall, said the Mortgage Rescue package was another string to the Council's bow: 'We have teams working closely with the community every day, providing practical and emotional support when people are often at their lowest. The Mortgage Rescue scheme is another important part of the support package we can offer families that find themselves in difficulty. It is important that we continue to do our best to ensure we provide the right support to the right people at the right time. It's been a tough year for many.'
