Have your say on CCTV in Taxis
November 27, 2020
We are consulting on whether CCTV in Taxi and Private Hire Vehicles should be voluntary or mandatory.
The consultation is taking place between December 3, 2020 and March 5, 2021 and asks whether we should move away from the current voluntary system and instead consider requiring all taxi and private hire vehicles to install CCTV.
The purpose of a taxi / private hire vehicle CCTV system should be to provide a safer environment for the benefit of the driver and passengers by:
- Deterring and preventing the occurrence of crime;
- Reducing the fear of crime;
- Assisting the Police in investigating incidents of crime;
- Assisting insurance companies in investigating motor vehicle accidents.
Portfolio Holder for Finance, Councillor Richard Fry, said: "We have a number of taxi and private hire vehicles that operate within the district and it is important that everybody's safety is paramount, and sometimes CCTV can be a tool which is used as part of this. The consultation is open until March and we would urge residents and businesses alike to have their say."
